The Gold Jade Buddha of Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) in Sanya (population460,000), South China's Hainan Province, was officially listed as the world's first Buddha statue in the Record Book of Shanghai Grand World Guinness in December 1998. The 3.8-metre statue is made of more than 100 kilograms of gold, and over 120 carats of diamonds from South Africa, in addition to several thousand other gemstones, including rubies, emeralds, pearls and coral.

The statue, the fruit of the toil of artists from Shenzhen Royal Jewellery Art Corporation Ltd. in Guangdong Province, consists offour parts: gold statue, aureole, the radiant light around the head of the statue;lotus flower base;and sandalwood body seat.The statue, completely hand-made,is special for its extravagant and delicate traditional Chinese fine gold craftsmanship. A panel of 11 specialists from the China Buddhism Association,China Gemstone Association, the Forbidden City and other related departments spoke highly of the statue, saying it is a "precious piece of work." The moulding of the statue is a sign of a prosperous era,since most of the famous Buddha 8tatues were produced in times of peace and prosperity.

Ruins of the Great Wall in Tangshan

As highways and roads have been building leading deep into the previously inaccessible mountains, people have discovered more ruins of the Great Wall. The section of the ruined Great Wall at Tangshan in Hebei Province, about200 kilometres to northeast Beijing, opened to the tourist in late 2002.Linking the Shanhaiguan Pass to the east and the better-known Badaling section in Beijing, the wall stretches about 220 kilometres through Tangshan with 29 passes, 603 watchtowers and 82 beacon towers.The Xifengkou Gateway, located in Qianxi County at Tangshan, was an important stronghold in ancient times.

The structure looks just like a tired dragon drinking water, with its neck submerged in a lake and tail lifting up at the peak of the mountain. The name Xifeng, which means "peak of happiness," has developed from an earlier meaning "site for a happy reunion." A delightful legend has it that a young man yearned to see his father, who had gone to build the Great Wall. He travelled a long distance and finally found his father working there. Overjoyed after a separation, which lasted many years, both father and son lived there for the rest of their lives. Part of the Great Wall along the Jiufeng Mountain is unique in that it is only 70 centimetres wide at itsnarrowest point. In fact, it is the wall's narrowest section.

The Former Residence of Zhu De

The Former Residence of Zhu De (1886-1976) is located at N0 2 Huayuanjiao of the eastern end of Minde Road. Assigned by the Communist Party of China, ZhuDe came to live in Nanchang to develop the revolutionary activities. On July 27,1927, Zhou Enlai arrived in Nanchang from Hubei Province and came first to discuss the general plan for the uprising with Zhu De in his house. The deputy director of the General Political Department of the Northern Expeditionary Army, Guo Moruo (1892-1978), once lived in this residence, and wrote many well known articles. The original appearance of the former bedroom of Zhu De and the hall where Zhou EnLai lived has been revamped.

The Former Site of Officers Educational Regiment
Established by Zhu De
It is located at the N0 58 August lst Avenue. It used to be the place where the Qing Dynasty trained its army during its last period, and later it became an early provincial military academy. In spring, 1927, Zhu De set up the Officers Educational Regiment, holding the post of the regiment commander himself, and thus trained a number of armed cadres. Some of them took part in the August lst Nanchang Uprising. The original appearance of the former office and bedroom of Zhu De has been renovated. Some of the furniture from those days are on show in this building.

Jiangsu Linggu Monastery

Jiangsu Linggu Monastery lies 1.5 kilometres east of Dr Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum and was built in 514 and was moved to the present location in 1381. In order to build his grand mausoleum on an auspicious site, the first Ming emperor, Zhuftianzhang had first to remove the existing temple, the Lingguo Monastery,to its present wooded peak. All that remains of that Ming temple is the 46-metre long Beamless Hall, made of brick with no supporting wooden beams. A magnificent Pailou or Archway' leads to the hall. West of the hall is the flat Coiled Dragons Stone, found beside a nearby pool, on which monks meditated. The present Lingguo Monastery dates from the late Qing period and is occupied by a community of monks.

To the north of the Beamless Hall stands the nine-storey Linggu Pagoda, which was constructed in 1929. For the energetic, the long climb to the top is rewarded with a magnificent view over wooded countryside.

But there were exceptions. In the 1901 Treaty signed between the Qing government and the Eight-Power Allied Forces (aggressive troops sent by Britain, the United States, Germany, France, tsarist Russia, Japan, Italy and Austria in 1900, to suppress the anti-imperialist Yihetuan Movement of the Chinese people, known to the West as the Boxer Rebellion), there was an article ordering that the Chinese government set up an archway in memory of Ketteler, who was German minister counsellor. For the foreign diplomats' safety, the Qing government sent a note, telling the foreign missions to leave Beijing for Tianjin.

Hunan Yuelu Academy

The appearance of Hunan Yuelu academy in the Song Dynastyprovided independence from and transcendence over worldly affairs, which are necessary for education and research. Besides Yuelu Shuyuan,other well known shuyuan in the Song Dynasty included the Yingtianfu(Suiyang) Shuyuan , Shangqiu, HenanProvince and Shigu Shuyuan of Hengyang, Hunan Province, andthe Bailudong Shuyuan of East China's Jiangxi Province. These were the four most famous academies in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). These shuyuan were all hidden in famous mountains with beautiful scenery, away from the government-run institutions of higher learning in big cities. Yuelu Shuyuan, for example, was built on the Yuelu Mountain, which has long been famous for red maple leaves in autumn.
